CAFAM CHINESE NEW YEAR DANCE PERFORMANCE

(age 4 and older)

As in the past, we are pleased to offer your child (age 4 and up) the opportunity to dance in the CAFAM Chinese New Year Fair, which will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland. There is no cost for the additional rehearsals, which will be held on four Sunday afternoons in January and early February. (The exception is for the Lion Dance troupe. A separate fee includes the cost of making the mask.)
New this year is the requirement to sign up for the performance classes now, during general registration. Sign-ups are required so that we have adequate time to procure all of the costumes. The cost of costumes will not exceed $15-$20. (The Steering Committee does not want cost to keep any child from participating if they wish and will waive the costume cost if necessary.)

Learn the Lion Dance

(ages 9 and older)

Our dance teacher extraordinaire, Karen Morency, will teach motivated students the traditional solo form of the lion dance. The class will culminate with a performance at the CAFAM Chinese New Year Fair Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland. The classes will take place in Portland on Sunday afternoons during the January dance rehearsals for the Fair. Extra classes may be scheduled for Lion Dancers. Children will need to provide yellow or brown body suits for the performances. Newly participating dancers will need to attend the mask making class (described below).
This class will accommodate 10 students (so long as the interested dancers match up with the school's existing dance costumes). Fee: $25 for children enrolled full-time in Chinese School; $50 for guests

Make Lion Masks for the School
(ages 9 and older)

Little artists will meet outside of school hours to create LION MASKS to be used by the lion dancers at Chinese New Year and beyond. The masks will be created using a multi-tiered process and will depend on the creativity and verve of each artist to make a unique, but useful, work of art. Dates: to be determined by participants please sign-up when you register.
Fee: Free with tuition or $10 for children not enrolled full-time in Chinese School.

Dumpling Parties
(ages 5 to 95)

Families will gather on a winter evening to learn how to make dumplings for Chinese New Year. These home gatherings will be held in several towns. If your family wishes to welcome a cooking teacher and other eager-to-learn families into your home, please let us know! Contact Kelli Pryor for more information.
Dates to be determined.

Tutoring
(all ages)

The school can direct you toward a teacher willing to tutor beyond school hours. All arrangements and fees are to be determined by the teacher and each family or group of families. Contact Kelli Pryor for more information.
